RTC Cadets Read for the Record

10/26/2017

BY . RENEE SILVER,
        RTC Teacher Cadet Instructor

On October 19th, Russell Technology Center Teacher Cadets participated in the Read for the Record Campaign. Read for the Record "brings much needed attention to inequities in early childhood education, inspires adults to read with children, spurs policymakers and organizations to take action towards transformative change in early education, and puts books in the hands of children across the country." In support of the campaign, the Cadets read to 215 students from the Greenwood County Early Childhood Center. They also incorporated songs, fingerplays and created puppets to engage the four-year-old students. This year’s campaign book was Quackers, by Liz Wong, a wonderful story that follows a kitten who grows up believing he is a duck. This tale is about understanding, acceptance, and learning it’s okay to be whoever you want to be. The cadets enjoyed sharing this sweet story about friendship, understanding and being different.

The Center for Educator Recruitment, Retention, & Advancement (CERRA) is seeking an exemplary educator for a 10-month, part-time position on the CERRA staff as a Pre-Collegiate Program Facilitator for region four of the state. This region includes the following school districts: Clarendon (1, 2, 3), Darlington, Dillon (3, 4), Florence (1, 2, 3, 4, 5), Georgetown, Horry, Lee, Marion, Marlboro, Sumter, and Williamsburg. The educator selected for this position will carry out various pre-collegiate program activities sponsored by CERRA.

This announcement is an open invitation to members of the CERRA network to consider applying for this position. Please keep in mind that residence in the region outlined by the districts listed above will be a strong consideration when screening applications, and preference will be given to applicants who have been heavily involved with CERRA programs. Selection will be based on judgments about the educator's commitment, initiative, enthusiasm, interpersonal, organizational, and public relations skills. This position is a part-time position with hours to be determined, but will range between 20-29 hours of work per week during the academic school year (August through May). The position will require day travel within the region and moderate travel outside the region, including overnight stays when warranted. Travel costs will be reimbursed by CERRA under the guidelines established by the State of South Carolina.

Attached is an outline of the responsibilities associated with the Pre-Collegiate Program Facilitator position. In addition to direct involvement with the ProTeam and Teacher Cadet sites, Pre-Collegiate Program Facilitators make site visits to district level administrators who lead and support pre-collegiate efforts for districts and College Partners. Increased emphasis is placed on districts with specific needs, such as those participating in the rural recruitment initiative.

No application form is required. Interested educators should submit a letter of interest and a rèsumè to Marcella Wine-Snyder no later than November 7, 2017. Those selected for the next phase of the application process will be contacted for interviews, which will take place at the CERRA office in Rock Hill. Interviews will be scheduled for November 27, 2017 in Rock Hill with an anticipated start date of January 2, 2018.

If you have questions or need further information, we encourage you to talk to one of the current Program Facilitators to learn more. You may reach us (turnerj@winthrop.edu, winesnyderm@cerra.org), and the Pre-Collegiate Program Facilitators, Rona Neely (rona@cerra.org), Karen Pack (karen@cerra.org), Arthur Pinckney (pinckneya@cerra.org), Jean Burden (jean@cerra.org), or Kelly Browder (kelly@cerra.org) via email. Phone numbers for each of us are listed on our Web site (www.cerra.org).

Thank you for the many contributions you make to the teaching profession and CERRA's programs. We look forward to hearing from you by November 7, 2017.

Please submit letters of interest and rèsumès via electronic submission or hard copy, no later than November 7, 2017 to:

We are All Different, and That's Okay

BY MACHELLE GRAY

The Dixie High School Teacher Cadets are posing with their puppets and puppet show background. The cadets' puppet show was titled, We are All Different, and That's Okay. Students enjoyed writing a script that shows that even though we are different, we still all have something to contribute. The students worked hard on creating a background that was colorful, imaginative, and engaging. The puppet show included 3 scene changes:  a school, a sunken ship, and a coral reef. The cadets performed the puppet show for some of their peers and received some constructive feedback. They hope to be able to perform the puppet show at the elementary school later in the year.

Teacher Cadets at Abbeville High School in Region 2 went on their first class visits yesterday. TC Instructor, Krystal Brown organized observations in classrooms at Long Cane Primary School. Cadets observed, assisted, and even worked in small groups or one-on-one with students. They all had engaging stories to share and we captured a few on video. Featured are Taylor McNair, Jamarius Slappy, and Kylie Booth.
