A native of Charleston, South Carolina, Marcella graduated from Burke High School in 1988 as a Charleston County Scholar Honor Graduate. She was awarded a four-year Presidential Scholarship to Benedict College to pursue a post-secondary degree. Her decision to pursue a career in education was primarily influenced by her participation in the Teacher Cadet program during her senior year. Marcella earned a B.A. in English Education from Benedict College in 1992 and went on to earn a M. Ed. in Education from Cambridge College-Boston in 1998 and an Ed.S in Educational Leadership from Cambridge College-Augusta in 2009.
Marcella has been in education for 23 years now, having served 15 of those teaching in both Richland County School District One and School District Five of Lexington and Richland Counties as an English educator/instructor. As a lifelong educator with a passion for improving the teaching profession, Marcella is most proud of her connections to CERRA and its programs. She is a former Teacher Cadet, Teacher Cadet instructor, and Teacher in Residence. She is a National Board Certified teacher in AYA-ELA, certified mentor and mentor trainer.
Marcella’s educational experiences have afforded her the opportunity to mentor new teachers; serve as an ADEPT evaluator, a curriculum consultant, and a cooperating teacher for student teachers from local colleges/universities; and make professional presentations on local, state, and national levels.
Among the many accolades she has received, Marcella was named Teacher of the Year at the Richland One Middle College for two years in a row, where she was an English instructor and a teacher mentor for new teachers. Marcella resides in Irmo with her family. What brought you to CERRA? I have a long history with CERRA. I was a Teacher Cadet at Burke High School in Charleston, SC in 1988. I became a Teacher Cadet instructor in 1994 at Lower Richland High School in Richland School District #1 and then began the program at the Richland One Middle College on the campus of Midlands Technical College in 2006. I became a CERRA Advisory Board member and Teacher in Residence in 2007.
