Historical Teacher Cadet Data

The program was piloted in four high schools in 1985 - 1986 and quickly grew to 28 schools in its second year, all of which still offer the Teacher Cadet Program.

More than 53,000 students have participated in the program in its 26 year history.
2011-2012 Teacher Cadet Data

72% of all public high schools in South Carolina had a Teacher Cadet Program.

160 South Carolina high schools offered 177 sections of the course.

2,427 students in South Carolina participated in the program –863 (35.6%) are non-white students and 554 (22.8%) are males.

After completing the course, 41.3% of Teacher Cadets chose teaching as the career they plan to pursue after college.

After completing the course, more than one out of every four (26.1%) Teacher Cadets who now plan to teach indicated they had been undecided or planned to pursue a different career before taking the course.

77% of Teacher Cadets reported that the course was very effective in helping them formulate a positive perception of the teaching profession; 96.3% said that the course was either very effective or somewhat effective in doing so.

43% of Teacher Cadet sites were located in schools identified as 2011-12 Geographic Critical Need Schools relative to the SC Teacher Loan Cancellation Program.

24 sites had an absolute rating of below average or at-risk.

22 sites had a teacher turnover rate of 20% or more for the past 3 years.

63 sites had a poverty index of 70% or more.

21% of Teacher Cadets applied for admission into the Teaching Fellows Program.

Data provided by the South Carolina Department of Education shows that one out of every five (20%) of these Cadets has gone on to earn teacher certification and 4,043 former Cadets were employed in a South Carolina public school district during the 2008-2009 school year.

Schools in 33 other states have purchased and had instructors trained to use the Teacher Cadet curriculum, which is now in its Tenth Edition.
