History of South Carolina Schools

Historical Teacher Cadet Data

  • The program was piloted in four high schools in 1985 - 1986 and quickly grew to 28 schools in its second year, all of which still offer the Teacher Cadet Program.
  • More than 50,000 students have participated in the program in its 26 year history.

2010-2011 Teacher Cadet Data

  • 157 South Carolina high schools offered 176 sections of the course.
  • 2,457 students in South Carolina participated in the program – 529 students were males and 799 were non-white students.
  • After completing the course, 41% of the Teacher Cadets chose teaching as the career they plan to pursue after college.
  • After completing the course, nearly 1 out of every 5 (18%) Teacher Cadets who plan to teach indicated they were undecided or planned to pursue a different career before taking the course.
  • 74% of Teacher Cadets reported that the course was very effective in helping them formulate a positive perception of the teaching profession. 94% said that the course was either very effective or somewhat effective in doing so.
  • During the 2010-11 school year, 71% of all public high schools in South Carolina had Teacher Cadet Programs.
  • 39% of Teacher Cadet sites were located in schools identified as Geographic Critical Need Schools for 2010-11 (relative to the SC Teacher Loan Cancellation Program). These schools meet at least one of the following criteria: absolute rating of below average or at-risk (29 sites); teacher turnover rate of 20% or more for the past 3 years (31 sites); and/or poverty index of 70% or more (48 sites).
